Cake Decorating

just out of curiosity....

has anyone forgotten to put dowels or straws between the layers of a two tier cake? Ive had such a busy week……yesterday I was up at 6 am, still at it at 9! I was super stressed and super tired…..so, Id finished my last cake (an 8’ and 6’) , put it in the fridge and went to bed. Around midnight, I woke up and realized Id forgotten to put straws between the layers so up I get to take apart the two tiers and stick the straws in lol. BUT I was just wondering if anyone else had ever “forgotten” to put the supports in and what happened??? In my tiredness, I was tempted to just leave the darn thing, I was so over cakes lol.

Silly question I know lol

Yes I have Karen. One was a family b-day cake. Same, I was busy, it was a week or so before Christmas. Cake actually slid apart after arrival at my daughters, we all had a good chuckle …but it tasted great. I actually have crib notes now…reminders, cause I think everyone’s done it!!! We get busy, side tracked…we skip a step.
We’re the 8" and 6" stacked together already? If so, I wouldn’t have removed, would have pushed long straws/dowels through both layers.

awwww Karen I feel your pain :( I am often in my cakery 9 till midnight. My brain also works overtime whilst I am asleep. I do actually solve quite a lot of cake dilemas I may be having in my sleep, or come up with ideas for cakes.
As yet I haven’t forgotten to dowel a cake but I often think it will happen one day.
I hope your cake was ok, I think it should be x

I’ve forgotten, didn’t realise until half way through delivery. I stopped breathing the rest of the way there….. I was very lucky and it was fine. Thankfully the weather wasn’t hot.

Oh, been there done that!
For a family member thankfully.
I didn’t forget the dowels – I removed a cake board!!!
Watching one tier slowly collapse into the one below was a sight to see, we all stood and watched in fits of laughter.
Lesson learned!! 😜

Early on in my cake career, I sent out several cakes with no dowels whatsoever. No more than 2 tiers, but I was very lucky that none of them slipped or sunk. Still, if you have the presence of mind to remember them, always better! Of course the sleep deprivation will always play a part there.

dont know if ive just been lucky but i never put supports in if it is only 2 tiers (unless it is a very soft sponge mix) i usualy just brush a small amount of glue around the join and then pipe over it, hasnt failed yet lol

It probably would have been fine if the cake on top wasn’t too dense or covered with fondant, which adds weight to it. The biggest risk would have been the cake sinking onto the bottom cake, but in all honesty, if that had happened to me I wouldn’t have slept a wink the rest of the night worrying about it. So, like you, I would have gotten up and added the support. Don’t feel bad, things like that happen to all of us at one time or another.

most of my birthday cakes are 2 tier.. and I never use dowels or cake board under the 6". Am I suppose to?? They don’t sink or sag. Just lucky I guess or my cakes are more firm or something I suppose. Now wedding cakes.. yes I always do, just in case. Although one time I too forgot the cake board in second tier.. didn;t realize until delivery… then had to scramble to find something.. pulled it off in the end.
