Airbrush/painting marzipan?

Hi cakey friends…….Im making my son his birthday cake, problem is, he will only have it covered with marzipan.
Hes given me strict design insructions and wants a very colourful cake. Colourful stripes to be precise.
Does anyone have any tips for coloring marzipan and can it be airbrushed ok, as I think this may be quicker and I only have a couple days to make it!
I know it will be hard to get the colours bang on cos marzipan has a creamy natural tint…any advise would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance guys ;-))

You can colour marzipan with colour pastes as one option, and you can airbrush it too, I experimented with it a while ago and it was fine. I’ve not as yes tried painting on marzipan but can envisage it being just fine, in fact I’m sure you’d get a great effect with it and might try myself, thinking about it.

Further to Calli’s comment, I’ve painted on marzipan and that works fine too :). The only thing I’d add is that because it has a slightly ‘rougher’ finish than fondant you may not get quite such clean lines on very very fine detail x

Hi Christine, I have painted a lot on marzipan and find it is not a problem at all. The only slight issue sometimes can be the marzipan not being exactly white (as you say), which can of course affect the final colour of your piece. If the marzipan is smoothed well beforehand (I wear gloves for this) and allowed to dry completely, it is a very good base to paint on. I don’t have an airbrush but I can’t see why it would be any different. Crezart is the king of marzipan, he has a facebook page and I am sure would answer any questions, lovely John Cresswell. http://cakesdecor.com/crezart or https://www.facebook.com/crezart. It will be fab, fab knowing you! look forward to seeing the result. xx

Christine I look forwards to seeing it, the airbrushing is totally effective 😀 The colour of the marzipan will not effect it

When i started making cakes i always used marzipan :-) i find it easier to coloured it than fondant! With marzipan i need less colour paste than i do now with fondant.
And it i s right marzipan is rougher so maybe hard to get straight lines :-)
Good luck Christine xxx

Thanks Daantje!
Because he wants different coloured vertical stripes, I am going to mask off the sides and airbrush the stripes…. so, hopefully I may get pretty clean lines..

So I went and had a little play this past hour onto an already marzipanned fruit cake that I never got to use…I didn’t do any smoothing as I like some texture on my surfaces. . So yes, you can paint onto marzipan and with no marzipan showing through, the bee, apple on left and lemons is in cocoa butter, the other apple I used edible dusts mixed with colour essence (I used orange, as it smells great) it’s far better than vodka as it dries quicker…
Here is my rough results.. And what fun I had, so thanks so much Christine for raising the subject as not only did I learn something new with your query, but got to give it a go too… I have pianting classes coming up soon, and also there will be video ones available on Pretty Witty Cakes and Paul Bradford in next couple of months :) ….
I’m looking forwards to seeing your creation and yes your masking will work well with stripes …. Have fun xxxx
