Questions concerning.. Entering a competition

Hello my lovely cake friends! I decided to enter my first competition. Eeeek! I have a question and am hoping for some advice. The categories are from amateur to professional of course. I chose intermediate – maybe to challenge myself a bit more and to get tips and comments about what works what doesnt … Etc. you know things people dont want to tell you to not hurt your feelings :)- but also because it stated to pick this category if you have advanced skills which I do not but it said to select this if you have taken more than one cake class. Although I am self taught I have taken a couple classes . Im quite nervous to enter it as intermediate rather than amateur and it is gonna be nerve wracking for sure. My question is do you get points taken off for paneling a tier? I am planning on double a double barrel tier and wanted to panel it. Is this a horrific idea? Thanks in advance for any help!

Good Luck with your competition Lori! I am myself going into one in 2 weeks time! gulp I have been told by a friend who is going to another one and knows some people that doing extra tall/ extended tiers do not give you any extra points despite them being more difficult to do. As long as you craftily disguise the joint either by smoothing it or decorating it there shouldn’t be any problems with panelling. What I have been told is to read entry rules many times and ask if something is vague. Also that depending on the category, the more techniques you use the more points you’ll get!!! Good Luck! Look forward to seeing your entry!

I have never entered a competition, so can be of no help. Good luck to both of you, Lori and Enrique!

While I’ve never competed in a cake competition, in the past I was a major competitor in the rose world on a national level. The main thing I’ve learned is to do it for fun, the learning and meeting lovely friends who share a common passion. After all, it matters not a wit whether you win or lose, although it is fun to win. Relax, enjoy, learn, be amazed and make friends. The awards will come in their time.

Thank you everyone! Thats exactly why I am doing it to learn and have fun! I really dont care to win or not but I am really looking forward to meeting new cake friends and the whole general experience. But I’m not gonna lie.. I sincerely do not want to be horrible :).

I agree with Sandra in that we better approach it with “having fun” in mind! Lori ain’t no master! :) We are all on a learning curve and I always like to think that so I am on same boat :) Competitions are very different from just designing and making cakes as first you have to comply to a criteria and then be lucky enough for the judges to like/understand what you did as there is no verbal explanation of your work. Thanks Khamphet/Julez/Sandra for best wishes! :)

Lori I keep in about 3 competitions a year for the last 3 years. Enrique and everyone else’s advice is spot on. For what I have seen it is not really a matter of points deducted as what will get you points. Having a lot of techniques will surely get you points. Originality is a big one as well.

I would also suggest talking with the judges that grade you and leave you comments. Sometimes the comments left are vague and don’t really help you improve but if you flat out ask them what you could have done better most are very helpful and will sit and take the time to review your piece with you.

Good luck and just have fun!
