Lori I keep in about 3 competitions a year for the last 3 years. Enrique and everyone else’s advice is spot on. For what I have seen it is not really a matter of points deducted as what will get you points. Having a lot of techniques will surely get you points. Originality is a big one as well.
I would also suggest talking with the judges that grade you and leave you comments. Sometimes the comments left are vague and don’t really help you improve but if you flat out ask them what you could have done better most are very helpful and will sit and take the time to review your piece with you.
