Ok, so I assume that this has been discussed many time before, but….. I would like to know people’s recommendations for good fondant.

I, currently just use Tesco roll out. I’ve always liked it, it’s great for small areas on novelty cakes. However, recently I have noticed that the fondant cracks around the edges on plain iced cakes! I can hide this normally, however I have lustred a few cakes and the cracks stick out like a sore thumb!!

I don’t want anything too expensive, as I generally make mid-size/priced cakes and material costs need to stay relatively low. I am happy to pay a little extra when doing wedding cakes as you obviously need the quality.

I am based in the UK, so Uk suppliers only please.

Thanking all your wonderful people, in advance :-)

Hello xx
I used to use Tesco till I had the same problem.
Now I always use Sainsbury’s fondant, it tastes really good, doesn’t crack and as long as you don’t over kneed it goes on really well. Their flower paste is really good too and much cheaper than other brands. xx

Agree with Karen, Sainsbury’s flower paste is incredible, and great price.
As for sugarpaste, I get mine from Windsor cakecraft (you can order online). It is very reasonably priced and I have never had any issues with it. It has a lovely, soft egg shell finish. I also love Squires, but that is a bit more pricey.

Roo's Little Cake Parlour

I have used renshaws fondant and flower paste with great results and the price is excellent! They come in many colours too xx

Hi there, I use Cake Stuff own brand Couture Sugarpaste. It seems a bit stronger than Renshaw and a bit more forgiving. I’ve recently purchased some Massa Ticino as I want to see what everyone’s talking about when they say how great it is…..but I’m a bit worried I’ll love it too as I also only make mid priced cakes! I love massa best but as Lizzie says it’s pretty pricey, rolls really thin though and worth budgeting for on extra special cakes if possible. Cake stuff is actually sugar paste direct repackaged. They sell direct also but I often order from cake stuff. It’s pliable but strong and much better than supermarket brands in my opinion.

I prefer culpitt … I have used sugarpaste direct but I find that dries too quick if you are aiming for a really smooth finish … Culpitt is more forgiving. In an emergency … I will use Sainsbury x

I use Renshaw great to work with, smooth and tastes good too. You can sometimes get a ‘naff’ packet (which in my opinion can happen with all makes as I’ve tried a few) but I’ve added a tiny bit off trex to prevent cracks

Kluman & Balter is the best I have used and I think I have pretty much tried them all, Its available at LCO Trading and Tom Anderson Food Supplies, Not much more than Supermarket Fondant.

i use sugar paste direct, It’s pliable but strong tastes good, gives a nice smooth finish. it did dry a little quick at times but now seems a lot better. I also find it good for modeling with a little Tylo added. You can get a greet range of colours & pack sizes.
