I need help with Giant Cupcake Cake

Hi, I have a customer asking me the price for a giant cupcake cake. I have never made one of these and need some help, please. I am not sure if there are different pan sizes, what is the best pan to use and how many will it feed.

Also, how do you price one of these?

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Mayra

Hi they can vary slightly vary in size sometimes but not much in it. you can get a wilton pan. I have used these before. However sometimes with these as the top of the cupcake mould and bottom of the cake mould are joined the top half of your cake can cook slightly quicker. Just need to keep your eye on it. I used wiltons quick release on the mould as it can stick and can be difficult to get out. As to price in the uk i charged £35 but it does depend on how much if your time has gone into it etc. Be good to have a look around locally for price comparisons. Portion sizes again are difficult due to how its cut. But roughly I would say 15? Not sure. Hope that helps! Not made many of them myself x

Hi. I have a silicon GCC set which does the job perfectly well, I know Wilton do a double tin too, with the top and bottom side by side. I know some people carve them but I’ve no experience of this, sorry. The only one I’ve sold was decorated with fondant with a fair amount of detail and a candy melt shell around the base so priced on a par with my 8" cakes. If I was decorating with buttercream swirls it would be cheaper.

Thank you Zoe & Mel so much for your help : ). I have seen the Wilton pan but would prefer that they be separate halves so I don’t have to worry about one cooking faster than the other.

Hi Mayra,
I have made one with the Wilton pan. The top half did seem to be done sooner, but it tasted great. Maybe fill the top pan a little fuller than it says and then cut off the excess. That way maybe it won’t be too dry. I can’t recall how many servings we got, but it is a funny shape to try to cut. I would maybe suggest that they have a cake underneath for cutting servings out of (if they need a lot). It probably had 10 servings but like I said I can’t recall exactly. People took some home.

Thank you Karen. I guess I can try the Wilton one and do as you suggested. I have been reading reviews on both wilton and silicone ones and they are both mixed reviews from 1* to 5*. I think it’s something I will have to purchase and play around with. More toys…. : )

Hi Mayra,
I have made a few of these cakes. I use the heavy duty cake mold and it works out beautifully. I based my pricing on the current market in my area and the amount to cover my cost. Depending on how the cake is cut, this will determine the amount of slices you end up with. I charge by the slice and different amounts for buttercream only, buttercream with fondant decorations, & fondant covered cakes. You can find me at thepinkbakerybox.com if you would like to elaborate more on this subject. I would love to share my experiences with you.

Hi Mayra, I charge £32 to £35 in the UK and more if it has lots of work involved. I would say you can get approx 15-18 slices from one of the giant cupcakes. My metal tins are from Nordic Ware and I have had them three years. They have lasted really well. Gill x
