Hey everybody. Lately I’ve been looking at a lot of pictures of cakes and wedding cakes, also flicking through Instagram photos. And I just feel like giving up cake decorating, I feel like I’ll never reach that level of those professional looking cakes and although I haven’t been doing it all that long it’s really getting me down. Has anybody else experienced this?

Hi! Please don’t give up! I totally understand how you feel, I don’t think there is one of us here that hasn’t felt like this. Have just looked at your cakes and they are lovely! I Iook at peoples cakes every day and think I will never be able to do that. You will get your own style and that will grow. I think you are doing really well and your last flower is very pretty! Every one at cakes decor is so lovely and are so willing to help. I myself have just been very worried about a cake I have to do and so many lovely ladies gave me help and advise which made me feel better. I hope I’ve helped convince you that you should carry on and its completely normal to feel this way! Will look forward to see more of your cakes!! :-) x

Thankyou for the comments :-) I guess you’re right, I need to find my own style and work on that. Your work is soo amazing it’s hard to imagine that you were scared of doing a cake!

I second Elli’s comments. You will find your style and then you will bloom :). You really can’t compare yourself to others but just yourself. As long as you see the progress you want that is all that matters. Art is subjective and everyone has different opinions on what is awesome.
Thanks prima :-) I just don’t know where this feeling came from, but I guess that’s what you get for trying to be a perfectionist lol

Never give up! Attached are one of the first cakes that I did back in August 2010 and one that I did last week. Both are three tiered buttercream cakes but look very different!

Don’t give up if this is something you enjoy. This is what I have found works for me. I know that I will never be as good as some of the work I have seen here. What I can do is be as good as I can be. Appreciate what you are able to do and keep trying new things. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. So what? So many people would love to do the work that you do. If you keep at it, you will see a big difference.
If you have a love for cake decorating, I hope you will continue to do it. I think everyone has those moments of doubt, me included. In fact, I battle that feeling quite regularly. When I have those days, I try to focus on the joy and pride I feel when I create a new cake, give myself credit for how far I’ve come in the improvement in my skills, without comparing myself too much to others (which admittedly can be hard sometimes). I’ve considered giving it up myself many times myself over the past couple of years. I have 4 young children, and sometimes I find it too difficult to try to balance meeting their needs while still finding the time and energy to invest in building my cake business and get my skills to the level I want to be at. But I really have a passion for this and don’t think I’d be happy doing anything else. The way I see it, if I just focus on enjoying the creative process as well as the challenge and reward of learning something new with each cake, then everything else will fall into place the way it was meant to. I hope this helps a little and that I’ve managed to give you a little bit of encouragement to carry on. Good luck to you and hope to continue seeing your cakes!

Don’t give up!!!!! Cake Decorating is an Art!!! And as Prima said – Art is subjective and everyone has different opinions. If you like cake decorating, if it makes you feel good that’s what it matters. You have to give it time, you have to practice, we all had our doubts and still have, because every day we are learning, every day a new technique appears, every day we see something that we would love to learn, every day we try to push ourselves a little bit forward, that’s the spirit! You can’t give up just like that!!!! NO!!! We won’t let you!! LOL
Don’t get me wrong. If you keep on practicing you will see that things evolve, you just have to give it time. You will see!!! Will look forward to see more of your cakes!! Cake Hugs!!!! xxx
