Pie inside a cake - my review

About two weeks ago I posed the question had anyone tried baking a pie inside a cake. I didn’t receive a whole lot of feedback. I’m not sure if people just hadn’t tried it to be able to comment or if the topic was just not of interest to anyone. At any rate I tried it out & thought I would share my results for those who are interested.

I stumbled upon the idea in an online search & was intrigued by it. I am always looking to try out new recipes especially those that are a break from the norm. This one qualified & my co-workers were willing test subjects for my experiment.

I went with cherry pie & chocolate cake. As I don’t like making pies & there is a pie outlet handy to me I purchased my pie already baked. You can’t beat an 8" pie for $2.25!

I lined the bottom of a 10" cake pan with parchment & also put parchment around the edge as my pan was only 2" tall & I was worried the cake might rise & spill over the pan. I prepared my favorite chocolate cake recipe (I can share if you are interested) & covered the bottom of the pan with it. I removed the pie from the foil pan & placed it right side up over the batter. Then I poured the remaining batter over the pie. I baked it at 325F for about 70 minutes. I cooled it on a wire rack a bit longer than I normally would for a regular cake. After removing it from the pan & while it was still a bit warm I poured semisweet chocolate ganache over the top allowing it to drip over the sides a bit. The finishing touch were some dark chocolate curls (that I forgot I had, hence the bit of white).

The verdict…… rave reviews! It didn’t take long at all to disappear. It was very tasty & definitely something I would make again! Most of the people I work with are not bakers but certainly enjoy baked goods & they thought the combination was perfect. They were also impressed by a pie inside a cake.

Hope you find this useful & feel free to message me if you have any questions :-)

(Please excuse the quality of the pictures as I just used my tablet to take them)

That is very interesting. Like you, I’m not a fan of making pies. Don’t ask me why but I really hate is doing the crust. I may just try something like this. Would love your chocolate cake recipe. I’m always looking to try new recipes.

I on the other hand…I love making pies. I do make great pastry, If I do say so myself!! This seems very intriguing….something I certainly like to try. I also would like your recipe.

Glad you all found my post interesting/helpful :-)

I think my dislike for making pies is my mother’s fault….lol. She never liked making them, was never happy with her crust, so I think the negativity rubbed off on me!

The chocolate cake recipe is one I found on Pinterest by a lady named Robin who has a blog called Bird on a Cake. The recipe is actually for Chocolate Chip Cheesecake Cake (which I have also made several variations of & highly recommend) but I use the chocolate cake part on it’s own quite frequently.

This is the link to the recipe:

Please let me know if you have any trouble with the link as I can send you the recipe directly if need be.

Christine, this is so quick to do that I think you can push it to the top of your list!

I would never have thought of putting a pie inside a cake!
I wonder – if you baked a thin layer of the cake before adding the pie, then poured more batter over the top and baking further – in order to have more cake under the pie – would the bottom section be horrendously overdone?

Heaven in paper cups!
