Cake Decorating

where am i going wrong :(

Hello every one!

Im after some advice if possible please. Im losing confidence in my work and i keep pushing myself harder. I build all my own frames for my cakes and can do gravity cakes and i try to do some sculpting. ive put cakes up and very rarely get any comments.

For example this week ive made a willy wonka cake with working waterfall and a chandelier cake! I really thought they would get some response but it seems not. Am i doing something wrong? Am I that bad?
This site seems very hard to get response from and i dont get much feedback at all!

Am i right in thinking the more followers you have the more likely you are to make home page or even top 3?

Sorry for the questions im just feeling a little unsure about myself and deflated at the mo. i did a wedding fayre yesterday and didnt get any bookings but lots of interest. Haha interest doesnt pay the bills!

thanks everyone xxx

Your cakes are brilliant, maybe try following more then you will get more followers and more people will see your creations

I feel your pain.
A follow doesn’t mean you’ll be followed back, and a hundred views with only one or two “fave” clicks can be a little disheartening…

Heaven in paper cups!

Your cakes are great Gadget Cakes. I was on here for almost 2 1/2 years before I started to get responses. As Lyn posted above, I started following more decorators. Then had more interaction, more comments and fav’s. Takes time, and you’ve only been a member for a couple of months.
I’m a hobby baker, so as far as your wedding fayre, I’ve not a clue. Depends so much on what you cakes you displayed, your prices, where your located, and your competition. Varies so much from town to city etc. Hopefully the experienced decorators here on CD can help you with that.

Hi gadget cakes!………ive been a member on here for 2 and a half years now and have got to know quite a lot of other cake decorators and have aquired a lot of followers. Please do not doubt yourself and lose confidence. As I see you have only been a member for 3-4 months and need to give it a little time.
When I joined I was obsessed with landing one of my cakes on the home page and dreaming of making top 3, even now ive only had a few make it and just recently was chuffed to get an editors choice. It takes a while and ive found to get established on here you must post and get to know people.
Your cakes look amazing and there is definately nothing wrong. Keep going and keep improving with every cake.
Without the inspiration on this site my cakes wouldnt be where they are now. Another piece of advice I would give you is good photography of your cakes, I invested in a good camera and lighting kit and my pics look better than ever.
Hope this all helps…….oh, and what is your name? ;-))

Hi Hayley. I’m sorry that you have been disappointed here. I think I was very lucky that my first cake on here went top three but that does prove that you don’t have to have followers to get there. A good photo really does help, just as Christine says. No matter how wonderful your cake it will never get to top 3 if all your kitchen stuff is on show. There is a brilliant Craftsy class available that shows how to take a great pic of your cake – it is so worth it when ou have spent so much time on it. :-) x

Hayley don’t despair. As everyone said it takes time to get known and people to notice your cakes. I have been on here for 3.5 years and only have 100 followers. I very rarely make it to Top 3. I think I have only had 2 or 3 of my 100 + cakes on top. There is one thing to remember likes and responses on here is not going to get you customers. I would focus on your local area and what they think about your cakes. Like June said the response at the fair may have nothing to do with your cakes themselves and just other factors.

I know getting responses and feedback from colleagues is something we all strive for but once again don’t despair in time this will come too. You have amazing cakes and just keep posting them :)

Hi Hayley !! Don’t ever doubt yourself … If ever there was a great cakey support community, it’s here, but like everyone has said already, it can take a little time to build up that network. Interaction is definitely a first step … say hi, show your face … it isn’t necessarily all down to the number of followers, but it does help, and you’ll soon see names becoming familiar as they return that first step. I know it can feel like walking into a crowded room where everyone has something to say and you can’t quite get heard … I was soooo shy initially on here, but they really are a wonderful bunch of people, you’ll see ! It’s such a busy platform that sometimes we don’t and can’t see all the creations going past and so we can’t always comment, but that certainly doesn’t mean anything against you or your creations … It’s only been a couple of months for you, but you’ll see that in time the community will start to take notice of your wonderful cakes ;) xx
