Cake designs for this year?

Hi all,

Just wondering how important it is to come up with new wedding cake designs for each year? I’ve noticed quite a few people I follow do this – is it a very helpful thing to do? I’m a way off from needing anything like this myself but just wondering. Your thoughts please?

TIA <3

I agree with Danijela .. I am inspired by everything.. and textures.. I normally just let the bride tell me what she wants and then I go from there sharing things that I think would be nice to add..

I think there are definitely trends to follow, color schemes that are “in” but I still think it’s up to each bride, they usually know what they want. I think the only time you need to know a lot about this is if you are attending a weeding exhibition and showing off your work, you want to have modern and fresh designs to show off to get clients.

Thank you ladies <3 I too go with the flow and the requests from the bride, but I started wondering if it was good to do some display cakes with new designs as an inspiration for brides and a kind of advertising, like I see some top bakers announce “brand new design for 2015”. Selma I’m so bad at this whole “keeping up” business, I like things I find beautiful and pay attention to new trends only when they suit me (lol!) I guess there’s room for improvement :) I might make a few practice cakes just to test out my ideas… If I have time! Xx

Hi Sawsen, this is similar to the topic I asked also recently. There will be trends, but you’ll only see that at the end of the year on what was popular I think. For inspiration I think Bridal shows are good so you can see what the Dress trends are and mirror colours, laces and trims in that, but mostly it comes from the Bride. Most Brides have a good idea of what they want. And if they don’t I find the key is to try and work with their interests, loves, and colours. And for Wedding Fairs I think you need to find a handwriting that is yours, or be so ‘out there differen’t so you’re noticed.

Thanks for your comment Karen… I didn’t really make my question clear it seems, what I was trying to say was is it worthy to make a few dummy cakes at the start of each year as your “new designs” and give them all names and such, so the brides can choose from them or get inspiration from them? I’ve seen a few people doing that but I never have… I guess it could be useful x

Speaking more as a customer with a daughter getting married this year – we have been to a few wedding fairs as well as Cake International at Birmingham last year. This helped her gather her thoughts about her theme and what she did and didn’t like. She was certainly drawn to stands with beautiful displays – cakes included. It was also interesting where a cake designer stood out from the crowd either because of flawless work or a signature style. So in that context I think dummys to display your work are a great idea if you go to wedding fairs to attract customers. We have also found that they helped us with ideas as she had absolutely no idea what she wanted to start with. I think the important thing then is to offer a personalised, flexible service if they don’t want an exact copy of one of your designs. Hope this helps from a customers perspective as I have no idea from the other side of the fence! X

Thanks Judy, and congratulations to your daughter! <3<3
