Florida Gator Groom's Cake

Hi, bakers,

I have been asked to do a Florida Gator Cake for a groom – they want it for 100 people, which would make this a very large alligator. I can figure out the body, but I need for this alligator to have his mouth open like the picture. So, I don’t know if I should do it out of RKT or gumpaste? I also thought about covering the body with modeling chocolate, as opposed to fondant – I think it may be more forgiving and easier to do the scales.

If you have done one before, or if you know how I can do the head without it falling off, I would appreciate the input.

I’ve never attempted anything like this before…but
1. Yes, think the head from RCT woul work best…easier to form the mouth, easier to attach to the cake..especially can be hidden by the t- shirt
2. I also agree with modeling chocolate, it is more forgiving. Or you could also do a 60/40 fondant and modeling chocolate ….that could work too…

If I had to make this cake on such a large scale, I would use either bamboo skewers or wooden dowels to support the lower and upper jaw. (I once made Elmo’s Arms with rkt and they broke and fell off!) I can’t blow the photo up, but the mouth doesn’t look as large as it appears. It looks like the back part of the mouth is solid, meaning the opened of the mouth is smaller the it appears. I hope this helps,

Thank you, ladies! I appreciate your input. I’m not sure if I’ll be making this awesome gator cake after all – my quote was more than the client had budgeted for a groom’s cake. I sent other suggestions – so I’m waiting to hear back!
