Edible gems

Hi Ellie… I would have thought it depends on what type of covering you use. I made some gelatine gems for my most recent wedding cake (ended up not using them because the colours didn’t match the rest of the decor), which was to be fondant. From the few I tried, as long as your fondant is dry I didn’t think they melted? perhaps it depends on the recipe used. In the end I went for non-edible gems because the only clear ones I could source weren’t brilliant enough for me, they looked too dull and imo were probably about as palatable as plastic ones anyway XD perhaps some others can give you more advice x

Yes i may end up using non edible ones as a last result. Goreti, great article, but what are Jolly Roger gems? I am in England and have never heard of them :/

Ellie you can buy any hard candy, melt it and pour into a mold. The Jolly Ranchers Goreti mentioned are just a brand of hard candy. You should use a silicone mold. If your mold is plastic, the hot candy will melt it. The candy can be melted in the microwave or oven. If you Google, you’ll find lots of “how too’s” to do it. ❤️

I have made gems from Isomalt but you have to be really careful handling them as they get dull. Plus I find them alittle yellowy even with using clear x
