Cake Decorating

Have you ever thought...........??

I’ve been making cakes for quite a while now……..but today for the first time I had a" light bulb moment" – when the last of my cake orders was collected for the weekend I suddenly had a thought………around 8pm tonight there will be two different parties going on. One for Tony who’s 50 and one for Rachel who’s 40…….both parties are for people I don’t know and I’ll probably never know. They’ll have all their friends and families with them celebrating, eating, drinking, laughing and smiling. And at some point in the evening they’ll bring out MY cake probably singing “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” and cutting into a cake that was made by ME!!! At that moment today I realised I don’t just make cakes……….I’m part of someone’s memories too. It’s a job that comes with responsibilities but also great privilege. An I’m proud as punch and deeply honoured to be trusted as part of that. I LOVE MY JOB XXXXX
And that got me thinking………..how about you??
Have you thought about the amount of smiles and memories your cakes will bring this weekend???

Karen, I only make my cakes for family and friends, so I am usually invited to the parties. I get to experience first hand the joy my cakes bring! I love when my oldest grandson (age 6) brags about the amazing cakes his grandma makes!

Karen, what you are saying is absolutely true!! Few times, I got invited to the venue/occasion where I made the cake and got to experience the reaction of people… Yes, makes you happy :-)

Oh Toni you are so lucky!!. Today in the Supermarket I was asked by a woman if I was the lady who made her husbands Birthday cake……(she’d seen me get out of my car in the car park with my business stickers on.) The cakes on here somewhere…..a man mowing the lawn. She said how lovely it was and how much her husband liked it. She said it had made his day. So although I wasn’t there it was so nice to get some lovely feedback. Quite often cakes are collected by people who are taking them as a surprise for someone I never get to meet.

Yes it’s true, I put some feedback together on my website this week as it’s so easy to forget that the cakes actually mean something, v cool :)

Thank you everyone, it seems we are all thinking the same. We are very luck to have the ability to do what we do. xx

Your so right Karen. Often we down play our contribution…but it’s an important memory. I also make mostly for family & friends, but have done several “paid” wedding cakes. I remember the 3rd wedding cake I ever did, for my daughters really good friend. Her hubby was, and still is, a football (soccer) nut. Bride purchased a cake topper with the bride dragging the groom. Well I dressed up the groom with a scarf of the real grooms favourite football team and added a soccer ball in between his legs. Trust me, it wasn’t that spectacular! And of course, being more experienced now, I would do things differently. Well I’ll never forget the B & G’s reaction. Over the moon…and they made all the relatives from Ireland come over and look. Just made my day!! I still smile every time I think about it…

What a nice sentiment karen, I hardy ever see the big cake moment. I try and encourage people to capture the moment and send me a picture but not many customers remember. My children are great though every cake I do they are so excited to see it and are very complimentary. :)

Hi June, I’m sure your daughters friend was thrilled with your effort. The fact that you customised the topper will have meant the world to them and their memories will last for ever. We are hard on ourselves, but every cake gets better so that’s why we can’t wait to start the next project. Hi Elizabeth, it’s hard to get people to give you feedback, but I try and console myself with the knowledge that cakes always make people happy, so chances are even if they don’t tell me how much they loved it, they will have told someone xxx
