Fondant Debate

Hi Everyone,

I am new to this site so please forgive me if this question has already been addressed.

I have been using Satin Ice fondant and more often than not I get the horrible elephant skin, which just drives me bonkers! I heard good things about Fondx, so bought that. The last two cakes I made I used Fondx….bad idea! The first cake had a huge tear, the second one, it almost tore but I managed to save it…well just about.

I find that Satin Ice dries too fast, and Fondx well, it doesn’t dry, and its difficult to cover the cake and then decorate it.

Has anyone tried mixing the two fondants? Or is there another brand that you can recommend?

Thanks so much

Aww, I really like Fondx, in fact I have found that it has a lot of stretchability to it. I like using Fondarific too.

Jenniffer how thick do you roll Fondx out to? Maybe I am rolling it too thin. Thks

I too am a fan of Fondx. I used to use Satin Ice and I also got the elephant skin. Fondx does dry it just give you more time to work with it. I also roll my fondant between vinyl sheets (The MAT from sweetwise) and this helps me get it on the cake easily without tears. I tend to roll my fondant about 1/8 inch thick.

Hope this helps

I make my own fondant. But have also used Satin Ice. I do notice tho that Satin Ice is not always consistent in quality. Sometimes you get a good batch, sometimes you don’t. I got a great deal on Satin Ice in late summer. I cut it into portions, and froze it. What I have been doing lately is making my own MMF and adding white chocolate to it. Then I add equal parts of homemade MMF & Satin Ice. Works great, nice and elastic, no elephant skin, and can roll thin. Think that’s from the addition of my white chocolate MMF.

Thanks so much for the great feed back. I think I will give Fondx a try again and maybe look into the MAT. The idea of MMF and Satin Ice sounds good too! How much white chocolate do you add to the MMF?
This is such a great site, I don’t know why I waited so long to join!

Yep, try the Mat, I use it too and I roll my fondant to about the same thickness as Prima.

Four parts fondant to one part white chocolate.

I also love Fondx. I think Satin Ice gets elephant skin so fast.

Thank you for the recommendations and the trick about the white chocolate. I shall have to make some MMF this weekend and also give fondx another chance!
You guys are the best!
