Airbrushing to make a black cake

Hi everyone
I’m in need of some help please. I have to cover a large 11" cake black. To keep the cost down (and ensure it tastes nice) I was going to cover the cake in grey fondant and then spray it black with my airbrush.
I just wondered if other people did this and if anyone had any tips?
What brands/makes of colour for an airbrush do people use?
How much colour will I need?
Anything that I should avoid doing?
Help please!!! It’s a big cake and I don’t want to mess it up.
Thank you x

Hi Sharon,

I use my airbrush a lot especially for dark colours. I airbrush straight on white icing rather than colouring the icing at all (in my cake album the dragon was white before I airbrushed as was the car) . Highly recommend Dinkydoodle airbrush paints. I use her airbrush and paints as they cover well and I can layer light colours over dark colours. There is a black matt, black pearl and black (which dries shiny) depending on what look you want. I don’t think you would need more than one bottle of airbrush colour from Dinkydoodle, but can’t comment on other makes as I have never used anything different.

I second Jenni’s reply, I too use the dinky doodle and now airbrush everything.

I also spray a plain white cake to be black.
I’ve used Kroma Kolors and Amerimist.
I find the Amerimist has a green tinge to it.
The Kroma one smells a bit strange!!
I would think Dinkydoodles is definitely the way to go. She seems to be very innovative with her colour solutions.

Thanks everyone. I have bought some Renshaws black sugarpaste and have dinky doodles colour too. Only about half a bottle though so I may go for the icing option.
I do worry about taste though on both products.

I love coloring cakes black with my airbrush – I find it’s the easiest color to do because it really can’t be streaky or darker in certain places. Black is black, won’t go any darker :) I use americolor. I have the bit medium sized bottle, I hardly used any to cover a 10" cake.

Here is a cake that is airbrushed as is the cake drum, everything was white before I started.

Don’t forget to airbrush in layers and make sure you let them completely dry between applications. this will cut down on runs and uneven colors.

Hi, sorry for jumping in, can I ask if you airbrush a cake black can you then airbrush over the top with silver to get a true silver? I am wondering about airbrushing a cake black too so the replies on this thread was really helpful. Jo x
