I have a big wedding cake coming up that is going to be covered in all red and black fondant. I don’t normally use satin ice because its so expensive for me but I need pre-colored black and red fondant. I’m looking to get around 15-20lbs of each color. So my question is, if you buy your fondant (particularly satin ice) online, where do you shop? Around how much does it normally cost you in products and shipping?

I order wholesale, and a 5# tub runs about $18. However, since there’s a minimum order you have to plan ahead. Shipping on that minimum order is around $20 depending on what one buys. If you find yourself consuming lots of stuff in your baking it might be worth checking into an account with CK Products.
That said, you can get the same for about $27 at Country Kitchen Sweet Art (www.countrykitchensa.com), shipping’s around ten dollars. Good Luck!
for Satin Ice, I have found GlobalSugarArt.com to have the lowest prices (a 5lb tub will cost you only $20).

Have you tried sweetwise.com? I think their prices are pretty decent.

I live in CA and for me, I’ve found the best prices and shipping total to be from the Baker’s Kitchen. I’ve compared them to country kitchen sweet art, global sugar art, amazon. I think the shipping costs factor into it alot because the tubs can be quite heavy to ship. good luck and share your best findings with us.

I also live in CA and I havent looked around a ton yet but so far bakers kitchen is looking like the best price. 4 black 5lb and 4 red 5lb buckets for about $130 shipped. I’m definitely going to go through and check out these other sites! I am going to try making a list so I can keep track of all the prices and find the best deal. Thank you everyone!

After being reminded of someones bad expierence with ordering from the bakers kitchen, Maria, how often do you purchase from them and have you ever had any problems?

Hi Nikki, I’ve ordered from them atleast a dozen times in the last year and I’ve never had an issue with my order. I just ordered again yesterday and looked for a better price elsewhere first and still came up empty.

Have you worked with Satin Ice before?? It is not the friendliest of fondants if you haven’t. Especially in red & black! Know that it will CRACK! Have you ever used FONDX?? It is has less of an attitude… (Cracking) and.. it’s made in CA! Don’t get me wrong, I use Satin Ice, but I have been through 5 brands before perfecting it’s use.

Red and black are the only colors of satin ice I have used but I honestly cant remember if I have used to them to cover a cake yet. I mostly use them for detail work and things of that nature. I have never tried fondx. I’m a little worried because I don’t have a ton of time to figure this out! The wedding is August 11th and My client still hasn’t sent me her deposit. Maybe I can get over to a local supply shop and give a small tub of fondx a try to play with. Something that is forgiving and doesn’t dry out too quick would be preferable as I am used to working with wilton fondant..and in the dry so cal heat in the middle of August I know I will need to work lighting fast if I use satin ice.
