Pre-fondant smoothing

How do you get the cake smooth before adding fondant?
We have added icing first but there are still bumps showing through

Try using a hot knife or spatula to smooth the ganache or buttercream. Just dip the spatula in very hot water, wipe off the excess water and use it to smooth the sides. It usually works very well. Good luck :)

I use either my profroster, or a large stainless steel ruler. There are many great tutorials on YouTube about smoothing your cake. If you’re cake isn’t perfectly smooth, you are correct, every lump and bump will show through.
