Hiya
I would dearly love it if you would please help me with some research I am doing. It will take just a few moments. I’m a cake decorator myself and I’m doing a quick survey for a project I am working on, your input would be anonymous and a huge help. I hope you don’t mind. I need as many answers as possible by Tuesday 8th December 2015 Kxx
1) Please give your thoughts on the following statement?
“Cake decorators work hard for pennies and compete on price and don’t get the value for their work”.
2) How many cakes do you create per week?
3) How easy do you find it to charge for your work?
4) What do you put in place so you can charge a rewarding rate for your work?
5) How long have you been in business for?
6) What’s the number 1 thing that has been key to building your business?
If you could come back to me on receipt so I have your response by Tuesday that would be awesome.
I know it’s a heck of an ask. Fingers crossed I hear from you soon.
Many thanks
Kasey xx

28 views and no replies 😩 It’s ok if you’d prefer not to answer all the questions. Just question 1 at least would be wonderful 😁💋

“Cake decorators work hard for pennies and compete on price and don’t get the value for their work.”
I think it’s a fair statement, and it’s something I’ve spoken about with cake decorators and non-bakers alike.
If we charged what our sugar art was really worth, we’d never sell anything.
Heaven in paper cups!
What is your Project for Kasey?

1) It’s been going on for years on end, Cakers are never paid their worth. I feel that most of us do it just for the joy of doing it really.
2) Only one per week as I teach most of the time.
3) It has become easier for me to charge for my work as most of it is very specialized.
4) I have carved out a niche for myself in being able to provide something most cake decorators aren’t able. Having an art background has blessed me with the ability to put that art into cake. I am therefore able to weed out regular “I want a blue cake with polka dots” clients and now am able to focus on the higher end clients that are purchasing Art Work. It’s a completely different mentality.
5) I have been in business for over 10 years doing cake
6) #1 key thing to building my business: Has been having the luxury to say No, that is not what I want to do. Not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to do that. I am now able to choose which projects I want to take on, meaning I get to stay passionate about each chosen project. That passion leads to a better product and my clients see the quality they get and don’t mind paying top dollar. I spent my entire life doing what everyone else wanted, and have made the conscious choice to now do what I want. My bread and butter are my classes and the artistry in caking is my passion and the icing on my cake.

That’s fabulous guys. Thank you so much for your input.
I’m so jealous Lesi – I need to book onto your classes. Some of my most favourite designers have an art background and use cake as their medium. It absolutely just make a difference. In the meantime however it would be great if the efforts highly artistic to simply beautiful and competent could be understood by customers and justly rewarded.
I’m just gathering info right now Karen. I’ll be sharing on completion. Hopefully I’ll meet my target so I can share sooner rather than later.
