Cake Decorating

Firefighter trying to bake!

Hey everyone, I’m Nick and I’m a firefighter from Virginia. I’m trying to learn how to decorate cakes and would just like some feedback. It’s tough to get constructive criticism from other firefighters about cake decorating! Lol. I created a Instagram if anyone can help. @cakesbynick

Thanks everyone!

I’m not a professional but I recommend starting with the Wilton classes at the local craft store. They are inexpensive & teach you the basics. Thee are 4 courses – once a week for 4 weeks for each course. You can sometimes make good contacts & friends there. I did. Make sure you sign up for emails to get coupons for the store(s) in your area. You Tube offers lots of tutorials. Edna delaCruz at DesignMeACake.com & she is a Wilton instructor! If you can’t take a class, look through the tutorials on her page as well as Wilton.com. I would say that’s a good start.

I agree with Jazz. I teach The Wilton Method of Cake Decorating. They are a great starting point for in person learning. If in person learning is difficult Wilton also has online classes at Craftsy.com. If you get a good instructor you will be able to keep in touch and get personal help and guidance. I keep in touch with many past students.

Good luck with your journey and welcome to your new addiction – LOL! :)

Post some pictures on CakesDecor and we can see them. I can’t locate your instagram.

Thanks everyone! That is tremendous advice. I’m not sure why my Instagram isn’t pulling up for you. Cakesbynick is the name. Here is one of my cakes!

That is really cute Nick!

Looks great! The only thing I would mention is that each cake tier should be about 4" high. The cake above would have a much bigger impact if each of the tiers was taller. And then the table and characters on top. The little bones and paw prints would fit better on the cake sides and look more proportioned. But other than that I think it’s fabulous. :)

This is a wonderful online site to learn cake decorating at home in your own time and it’s very inexpensive and very user friendly and you will learn tonnes. It’s definitely one of my favorite sites. You will find me there too. I hope you check it out. The Blog Tutorials are 100% Free so you can always check them out.

Welcome to Cakesdecor.com Nick. Good luck in your cake journey! You will learn something new with each cake you make and it may not be about cake.
I think your cake is off to a good start. There are tons of places on the internet where you can learn all kinds of things about cake decorating if you just look in the right places. There are a lot of free tutorials here on CD. I’m a big Edna De La Cruz fan myself. I also like Craftsy.com for classes there and sometimes they are on sale and you can pick up a class for as cheap as $9.99. (incidentally, they have the wilton classes you can watch from home for about $14.00)
My advice to you is, do what you love, love what you do. Take your time and enjoy the process. Try to get better with each cake you make.
Good Luck! Happy Caking!
