quality vanilla

Just wondering what you Canadian bakers are using as a good quality vanilla. I pose the question to Canadian bakers not to exclude everyone else but with the thought that if a recommendation is made I’d like to know I can find it. I get discouraged when I see a great product only to find the shipping is as much or more than what it costs or more times than not I can’t even find a Canadian distributor.

I was given a bottle from someone who traveled to Mexico & wow!! So good!! The only problem is that I don’t want to share it. Is that bad?! I am now on the quest for a quality vanilla to use in the cakes I do for friends. I’ve been trying some different ones & have also ordered some extraction grade Madagascar beans to try making my own (but it’s not ready yet).

Looking forward to your feedback!

Thanks!

Ha Ha MsGF/Terri ditto for me …prices are good there. Plus I buy many of my dusts and such from them. Fortunately for me, I have 2 bottles from Mexico as we go at least every 2 yrs for a va-ca. I know there’s a Costco in Halifax, cause my daughter used to live there. Not so sure in Annapolis Valley. They have Madagascar vanilla, and although pricey, you only use such a small amount.

Thanks ladies for your feedback. I haven’t bought a lot from Vanilla Food Company but I guess I’ll check them out. Halifax is only an hr away & I do buy the stuff at Costco, just no comparison the stuff from Mexico that I have.

I buy Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla beans and make my own extract. I always have one on the go and one steeping for at least 3 months before I use it. Vanilla beans and vanilla vodka.

It’s the cheapest and best tasting way to go.

I don’t know if you have a Thrifty’s where you are, but they have a really good Madagascar vanilla I’ve used for years. However, EVERY time in the past 10 years of my career that I’ve known someone going to Mexico, I order a 1 litre bottle from them!

But I’m on Vancouver Island and I don’t know if they have stores outside of B.C.

We don’t have Thrify’s in Ontario. Thinking not in NS either. It’s probably regional to where you are Rachel.
