working with gum paste

Can some one answer my question and how to fix it? Yesterday I was trying to make a topper with gum paste, I could seem to get it to roll with out splitting what was I doing wrong, was the gum paste bad? I’ve made an elephant for my grandbaby’s shower and it came out great, was trying a lion, just couldn’t seem to roll it smooth, I rolled it and rolled it, help.

Gumpaste was too dry. Add some shortening/vegatable fat, and knead it in well. Gumpaste should feel smooth and elastic.

Thank you, I kept putting Crisco on my hands and rolling, rolling, my hands were sore..lol

I gave up and used fondant…

No Jersey080 I don’t mean putting crisco on your hands and on your working surface. That helps, but that won’t reconstitute gumpaste. You have to knead the crisco right into the dry gumpaste. As you knead it in, you can feel the gumpaste getting easier to handle, softer. You wrap and let it absorb for several minutes. Gumpaste should be very well wrapped and stored in a cool, dark place. I actually keep my containers of gumpaste in large coffee cans….works well….
