Need help on technique for adding finishing crumbs to side of cake

I am new to cake decorating and have a cake that, traditionally, has a finish of fine crumbs (I’ve been using a combination of graham crackers and arrowroot biscuits) on the top and sides. I’ve seen these in bakeries where the crumb finish is totally even across/around the cake. This is a crumb cover that is complete -you can’t see the frosting underneath.

Here is my question: I can’t figure out how to apply to crumbs on the side of the cake to achieve a nice, even coat: Any help anyone can give I would so appreciate! Thank you.

I know this is for sprinkles, but concept is the same. I put my cake inside a large box….catches all the mess. Hope this helps.

Jchuck -thank you for the video! I’m going to try that.

I do similar to the video also, but also do what jchuck said… put the cake on a stand in a larger box (I use a 4 inch tall plastic storage container that is really long and wide to accommodate all my different sizes of cakes. I do this with the crumbs, sprinkles and for PEARLS! Because those little pearls man, if you drop them they just bounce away. I still find them tucked into corners of my dining room and I’ve been doing it this way for about a year!

If I had a sample cake to practice with along with jimmies/crumbs, I’d try this experiment (no clue if my thinking is way off wack). Brush shortening on a piece of wax paper, the length of the cake’s circumference, sprinke on jimmies/crumbs and gently press down. Next lift the wax paper up next to the cake (jimmies/crumb side against the cake), HOPE the jimmies/crumbs stay on, and gently press the back of the wax paper against the cake, all the way around. Refrigerate an hour then slowly peel the wax paper off, HOPEFULLY leaving an even coating of jimmies/crumbs stuck to the side of the cake.??? No clue if this experiment would be too far fetched/wishful thinking.

Thank you for the help. You’re very creative! I will try it next time. It’s just a bit awkward to press the crumbs, etc. onto the side of a cake with your palm, and my cake is too unstable to roll it on its side. Thanks again!
