My name is Alberta. I am originally from the coast of NC but have lived for many years in OH/IN. I have 2 girls of my own 42 & 27 both are married. The oldest has 3 children & 2 grandchildren. But I also have 4 stepchildren all married, 14 step grandchildren, & 1 step great grandchild. And yes my girls have the same father. Both my current husband & I were married to our 1st spouses for more than 20 years. Also we are both RN’s (Registered Nurses). I have always wanted to decorated cakes but could never get the hang of the Wilton rose-so I gave up. However in 2003 I developed an unknown lung disease in which they had to open my lungs to get a good biopsy. I was in the hospital for 12 days becoming very weak- horrible-but never able to work again. So bored, I took the Wilton courses. I loved it! I have narcolepsy, many things that would keep me from actually committing to a lot of people but I bake for family & friends & fortunately my husbands lets me buy molds, etc when they are on sale.
Hi Alberta :) I too took up serious decorating following a difficult period of illness in my life. It’s amazing how healing it can be and how much progress you can make in something you love :) welcome to the site <3

Thanks everyone. Judy does your Mom take medication for the narcolepsy? Before getting to the maximum dose of medication I was awful, would fall asleep in the middle of a word during a conversation. Now I mostly have days that I just can’t stay awake or I can think I am wide awake maybe sitting here at the computer & look up at the screen to find I have typed a few rows of “k’s” or something.
It affects my mother slightly differently particularly if she was very emotional or stressed – and when she laughed. She would shake uncontrollably and drop things and lose control of her face muscles. She was very sleepy a lot of the time, and could sometimes fall asleep mid sentence as well – but the medication has got it under control. There was a bad time about 30 years ago when the maker of the drug she took stopped making it because it wasn’t profitable (!). It was like a drug addict going cold turkey as she had to stop taking it while they found something else that suited her. Took a long time to get it diagnosed as she developed it after my brother was born over 50 years ago and not a lot was known. I really feel for you xx
