Cake Decorating Business

Looking for Pricing Guidance from Professional Cake Artists

Hi Everyone!

I’m new here! My name is Katie Sutton and before anyone gets too excited I’m not looking to begin selling my cakes. My husband and I run an errand/ delivery service that we started in the early part of the year and we’re considering expanding our services to professional businesses in the food industry – specifically businesses like bakeries. Now before anyone gets worried that we’re trying to sell our services here… we’re not. I’m trying to figure out about how much of your time two or three extra hours would be worth in the day. If there are a few members here who would feel comfortable helping me out that would be awesome!

I’m specifically wondering:

How long do you spend shopping for supplies?
What else could you be doing during that time?
How much is that time worth in terms of other things you could be doing? For example, if two or three hours of ingredient shopping could be poured into baking and decorating, how much extra money would you bring in for those extra few hours?

I appreciate the help so much! Thank you!

Sincerely,

Katie

Hello….if you’re looking to run errands for baking supplies for bakeries, I personally don’t see a need for it. As a bakery owner for 35 years, our supplies are delivered weekly by large distributors. Plus with all the online vendors available in our specialty of cakes, it’s so easy to just pop online and order what we need to be delivered via parcel post.
Having said all that….. there could be a need for your service. Instead of shopping for supplies for bakers, how about letting bakeries know that you could deliver the smaller cakes and/or whatever else the bakery makes to customers. I get requests from people that live out of state at least a couple times a month that would like to have cakes delivered to loved ones in the area. Our bakery has only one delivery person that delivers to our wholesale accounts and he doesn’t have the time to go off route and deliver very small orders.
On occasion, a customer has called a local delivery service (or taxi) to pick up their order and deliver it to them. The order is paid in advance by the customer, usually via credit card over the phone, then the rest of the transaction is between the customer and delivery company.
Hope this helps….

It absolutely does! It gives me an idea of what we can offer!

:) Happy to help. Other areas you could service might be running errands for offices or hospital staff. I bet Doctors and Nurses get sick of the ordinary call and deliver take out options. A lot of restaurants will make an order for take out but, do not deliver. The customer has to pick it up….are your wheels turning yet???? Now you can make up some snazzy business cards, or better yet, magnets…..and pass them all over your service area!
