Large Minion Cake

Has anyone ever made a minion cake using cake pans larger than 6"?

I need to make one that will feed up to 50 people. I was thinking I can use 8" round cakes and half of the Wilton soccer pan

Has anyone tried this, what was the outcome, and do you have any pointers?

TIA

hi! I haven’t tried making using 8" but I did mine with 6" cake pans and the wilton ball pan. I have to tell you that the ball pan is 6" in diameter so it is not a perfect fit unless you carve the edge of your 8" cake. So for me, what I did was make 2 minions so I could meet the number of servings, and not compromise the shape of the character. Hope this helps :)

I made a stacked minion…3-6" pans + a round corningware bowl for his head. Trust me, that was enough to cover!! It fed 20 adults and 3 children. It was a dense rich pound cake, so a small piece went a long way. My advice to you is to make extra cupcakes….much easier.

I agree with June; you’re risking stability in order to get a larger cake (8") tall enough to look proportionate, unless you put cake dividers under every-other layer or so. I did one and used 7" pans but it was 5 layers high; it still looked ‘squatty’:). I put dividers and used dowels for support. Hope this helps!

Yes Chris….and I have to say.., like you, I also used many dowels in each layer for stability. And one humongous main straw dowel right down the middle. Plus very thin cardboard dividers as well.

I wish I would have seen the responses before I baked last night lol

Now I’m nervous. I went ahead and baked the 8" cakes and the Wilton soccer pan for the top. I do plan on using bubble tea straws for support, like I do in my other tier cakes.

Tonight when I go home I’m going to tort and fill the cakes, and see how this will turn out. I saw a tutorial online where someone wrapped the cake with fondant instead of covering it from the top, so I might use that as my alternative. Depending on the height of the cake once its all stacked up

I’ve made one minion. I used 8" round pans x2 and a 8" dome pan for the round head part, vutvy could carve that if you don’t have a sphere pan. I buttercreamed it all together and then covers in yellow and then added detail after that. xx they are fun to make, so hope you have lots of fun with yours… Or why not make two smaller ones if you don’t have bigger pans! You can see my minion in my album. It was Nov last year xx

You must never limit your challenges, instead you must challenge your limits

I went ahead and used the 8" round pans with the 8" dome pan, and it came out pretty good. I was so nervous when it came time to cover with fondant so instead of covering the cake the traditional way, I “wrapped” the fondant around the cake. Much easier.
