DIY Mold Material

Has anyone tried the DIY Mold recipe that Avalon Cakes has out right now? The recipe is $5, but I’d like to know if it’s worth buying.
Here’s the link to it: http://www.avaloncakes.ecwid.com/#!/~/product/category=0&id=39386275
I’d really appreciate some feedback :)

If you decide not to make the recipe, Michael’s carries Mold Builder and that’s pretty good. I used it to make a beer bottle mold.

i used the Mold builder from Michael’s-took several days(letting the latex dry really well in between coats).I had to have a bottle that was open at the top to simulate pouring wine, and it held up to the punishment dealt to it-

I’ve not used Avalon’s but have used one called Silicone Plastique here in the Uk sold by “The Cake Decorating Company” it’s not cheap, so have reverted to using Artista Soft air drying clay for small molds. It’s far cheaper…. around £50 for a big tub of silicone plastique … Artista Soft is around £6-£8 and you can make quite a few molds from it. I have to be honest though, its not as flexible as the silicone, but serves a purpose for small molds for limited use :) You can use cold porcelain too mixed with the artista soft to make it more flexible.
There are other makes of silicone palstique and I bought some in the USA last year that was cheaper, but not that much cheaper.
Here is Artista Soft link, but there are many suppliers so best to goggle to get a good price: http://www.windsorcakecraft.co.uk/artista_soft_standard_white_paste_200g.html?source=googlebase&kw=&fl=1000&ci=60449157310&network=pla&gclid=CILJ67fqocACFVMRtAodhRYAhQ
Here is link to The Cake Decorating Company (UK based but ship overseas) for the Silcone, again, shop around for the best price where you are: http://www.thecakedecoratingcompany.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=4785

Cold Porcelain: http://www.windsorcakecraft.co.uk/products_search.php?search_string=modena&search=Go

you can also make your own cold porcelain: I use Alan Dunn’s from his books, but here is one I found :) http://www.craftmehappy.com/2013/09/making-cold-porcelain.html

I hope this is of some help or use?

I haven’t actually tried this…but want to. Bonnie has made many moulds with great success. Has her own recipe for DecoGel too. Her DecoGel Bonnie says tastes like gummy bears, as attested by her grandchildren. I’ve been searching for food grade glycerin for a reasonable price here where I live, as you need a good quantity for both recipes…

I tried it and while I may use it again in the future, the gelatin remained sticky! The details were better than some mold materials.

And it was VERY difficult to mix properly. :)
