Handbag handles.

Yes it is that time for me to make my first handbag cake. Can anyone give me any tips on the best way of making standing handles.

Hi Mandy, when I made my bag I too wanted the handles to stand up, I inserted gauge wire (florist wire) into the middle of the paste making sure I left a good amount uncovered on each end to insert into the bag. Once I was happy with the handles, I was able to shape it and leave to dry!

I watched Elisa Strauss hand bag class on Craftsy basically she just folded a piece of textured fondant, used the stitching tool where they join to make it look more realistic and put an 18 gauge wire inside (sticking out on each end), loosely, and left to completely dry. This is if you want your handles to be standing up resting on your cake…..

Thanks so much ladies. I had an idea that florist wire would be the way forward but was not sure of its strength. Will have a go and hopefully you can see the results in a couple of weeks.

oh trust me 18 gauge will do just fine, it’s pretty strong, and of course you need to bend it before you start with gumpaste, i don’t remember it right now, but i think she used gumpaste for handles, buckles, straps and all of those details.

I wonder if you could also use a foam bendy curler inside?? to get the top shape. Just a thought x
