Hi Mandy, when I made my bag I too wanted the handles to stand up, I inserted gauge wire (florist wire) into the middle of the paste making sure I left a good amount uncovered on each end to insert into the bag. Once I was happy with the handles, I was able to shape it and leave to dry!
