Flowerpot Cake

Hi All, I was wondering if anyone is able to give me any hints/tips advice etc. on making a flowerpot cake (making it for a 94th birthday!). I have come across a couple of tutorials & one of them shows making the actual cake in a terracotta pot (brand new) any advice on this or other suggestions would be most welcome. Thank you all in advance, any suggestions etc. much appreciated. Thanks guys.

What about making the flower pot actual cake instead of putting it into an real flower pot? It’s not hard to carve a flower pot shape and cover it in terracotta colored fondant.

I made one years ago when I first started decorating. If I remember correctly, I started with smaller tiers on the bottom and larger on top. It was then easy to just trim it into a flowerpot shape.

I have baked a cake in a terracotta pot. Works well. I use the pot for cake only. I’m sure there are good tut’s you can find on google.

Hi Ladies…thanks very much for your feedback. Whitecrafty/Goreti, I am intending for it all to be made out of cake, its actually just using the baking paper lined, unused terracotta pot, as a baking tin really, just to get the shape without having to carve it (although I could probably do with the practise !) as in the tutorial I found online somewhere. Actually jchuck it seems there are very few tutorials on this theme out there from what I can see, hence looking for any hints/tips on this great site. Thank you ladies once again, your input is very much appreciated. Have a great day.

Glad to help. Make sure to post a pic so we can see how it turned out.

Hi, Jennifer20, I made a flowerpot cake just couple of weeks ago, no matter if you make it round or square (like I did) the best thing to do is just bake cakes stack them, make two templates one small that will be the bottom of the pot and one bigger that will be the top. Put your cake on the bigger template upside down, put the small template one on top, center and carve away…. that way you will get that pot look. I even ganached my cake upside down, then flip it over when you are done you are ready for the fondant… You can panel the cake instead of covering it old fashion way. Hope this helps, tell me if you need any more help! Selma

Hi Selma, wished I’d seen your post a couple of days earlier! I did actually bake the cake in the terracotta pot (as in the tutuorial I followed). Problem was, I realised after I;d baked it, was that in this particular tutorial she did not torte the cake at all…just ganached it & I did not want one big tall lump of cake without any filling. So, by the time I had made a couple of layers & filled with ganache, somewhere along the line I lost the shape of the pot anyway :(( To be honest I ended up with a more or less straight “pot” was it was a bit of a waste of time & money anyway doing it that way (unless its just my not great skills!). I would definitely do it the way you suggest Selma. I haven;t done too much carving of cakes as yet & your suggestion of the templates is a great idea, but even without that, I don;t think I would bother with baking in a real pot again. Also, the cake itself turned out, what I would call a big “doughey” it was a white choc mud, but the texture was almost “bread pudding” like (if you know what I mean) , definitely not quite how it should a good mud should be. Luckily it was only for a family member, not a paying customer, but I do have another to make in a couple of weeks so your suggestions will definitely come in handy. Very much appreciated, thanks. Jen

I just checked your “pot plant” cake out Selma, its fantastic, I love the orchids!! Did you do those from a tutorial??

Thank you for the sweet comment, I love orchids and made some without a tutorial but then I was never very happy with them so I took James Rossell’s Craftsy orchid class and it was great, you learn tips and tricks that you can’t sort of figure out on your own. They always have special offers and coupons so you never need to pay the full price.
To tell you the truth I never understood why people bake in terracotta pots. You have more control if you just bake a cake, make templates to help you and carve, but some people are scared of carving. Even if you “chop” off to much you can always patch it up.

Will definitely do that next time, Thanks again Selma.
