This week I am about to embark on my first 3D cake of a cat, I have carved a flat horse head but never done anything carved 3D. It has to travel from Dorset to Yorkshire (a long way). Do I need to support it with a pole inside or anything if so what do I use and how do I do this? Do I make the head out of cake? or would you use cereal treats.? EEEk how do I start? It has to be done for Wednesday. Many thanks

Hi Elizabeth! You don’t mention the expected size of your cake, but even so I think the easiest route would be to use cereal treats for the head and do definitely plan on some supports. As a general rule (even for non-sculpted cake) I will use straws/dowels for every 4-5" of cake height. And any cake 2+ tiers always gets a master dowel rod through the center. Just sharpen a wooden dowel and run it from the head through the body and into the cake drum at the base of the cake. Good luck with your kitty!

Hi Lizzie, yeah definately use a central dowel and I would fix it into the board. I usually drill a small hole just a little bit smaller than my dowel so it fits in tight. You could also double your cake boards up to have more depth to push it into. Just glue them together. And if your cat has anything extending off it, such as arms then I would definately use more dowels, skewers are good or even strong flower wire. Plus, leave a day for your cake to set if its travelling so far you want to make sure any fondant etc. is really dry. Then it should travel fine xx hope this helps :-)

Thanks Christine, that is really helpful. Do you use normal dowel bought from a wood shop is it safe to use for cake it hasn’t been treated with anything?. I have only used rkt once before and was a complete disaster but I have had some advice from someone on here as usual so helpful.

You can buy plastic cake dowels. Thats what I use. Any cake shop will have themThe rkt, the best tip I have for those is rub your hands with trex (white veg fat) all over so that it doesnt stickmto you and compact them as tight as you can, they will set firmer..
