Top tier wedding cake saved for a christening cake a dying tradition?

Has anyone ever iced a fruit cake saved from a wedding cake to then be made into a Christening cake for their first child? This used to be the tradition but not so many people have fruit cake these days so it maybe a dying one.
I have done it twice. Once for my best friend I made her wedding cake then 2 years later stripped it back to make her christening cake for her first child, it was such a lovely thing to do but it was a worry that everyone would be ill after eating it however it was delicious. The second time I did it was for a lady I didn’t know and I hadn’t made their wedding cake so it was even more of a worry when I peeled back the old icing to see what lied underneath. Again everyone who ate it was fine. I have just posted a pic of this cake it is the large daisy one. So another question: what is the oldest cake anyone has iced or eaten and survived?? Would love to hear your thought thanks x

I made cupcakes with matching mini cakes for my friends 2 daughters weddings. They both froze there mini cakes. But they were not used for christening. Both were eaten for there 1st wedding anniversary, which is a tradition here. Cutting the brides wedding dress to make 1st child’s christening gown has definitely become a thing of the past.

To be honest, I had never heard of that tradition. In my area, it is the same as what June mentioned. It is for the first wedding anniversary. The cake is usually frozen. Didn’t do it myself. Eating a cake that was frozen for a year just didn’t appeal to me.

My niece froze two 8 inch cakes from her wedding. She kept them in the freezer for two year and used the first one this Christmas for her Christmas Cake to make sure that the cake was still good and will be using the other one in April for the Christening of her first baby boy!!! Malta was an English colony for almost 200 years and we have adopted many English traditions, this is one of them!

I did one this morning! The cake’s very small (4"), and it’s being used for a little girls 1st birthday instead :-)

I love your daisy cake.
As part of the wedding cake I offer my brides a small 4-6" 1st anniversary cake.
