These are beautiful and so clever of you! I doubt that your edible food colors are doing any damage to the environment, since they are edible.

I’ve been doing this with some of my colours. You can buy now all natural food colouring. But it is very expensive. Although I believe that you need much less of the natural colours. I’m also no longer using plastic straws for dowels in my cakes. I’m using wooden dowels because they are compostible. I only use my own homemade cake boards, also compostible.

Sandra, I agree with you. I didn’t mean they are toxic, just wanted to say that human beings have not the right to “color” water with chemical substances, even if they are edible, and my using alcohol too, can be dangerous, in my opinion 🙈. It’s so frustrating. Sometimes it’s seems that most of our work can damage the environment…I promise to do everything I can do, where and when it’s possible, because I also contributed to pollute our beautiful planet Earth. I hope we can fix our mistakes in time.😘

Clara you can use pure lemon oil instead of alcohol and achieve the same results. My daughter runs a fb page and blog, Simply Green Mom’s that promotes a better way of living. Being as green and environmentally responsible as possible. I’ve changed many, many of my ways. I haven’t used paper towels in years, no more plastic.

So happy to know that you use natural colors, Clara! So much better for the consumers and especially for the children who are affected by the chemicals in the “regular” non natural food colors". I love your experiment!!! I’ve been using Trucolor natural color for several years now. They have truly vibrant colors and a little does go a long way.

Sandra, non natural “edible colors” are made using chemicals. If they can be a cause of ADD in children as studies have shown, who knows what damage they are doing to the environment!

June, can you please share a link to your daughter’s blog?

June, I think that the problem with using lemon oil rather than alcohol is that it won’t evaporate quickly and therefore because of the added liquid it might change the consistency of the sugar paste when added to it. I’ve never tried it. Just a thought. I add just a couple of drops of tap water to the Trucolors that I use. No need for alcohol or anything else.

The Garden Baker…FYI:I’ve used pure lemon oil many times. It does evaporate, but just not as quickly as alcohol. And you need very little. And it doesn’t change the consistency of the sugar paste. Many decorators around the world use lemon oil instead of alcohol because of religious and other reasons. On the other hand water does take a long time to dry. And definitely too much water will affect sugar paste.
