sticky fondant

Help!! I am having problems with covering my cakes with fondant as after I get the cover on and have smoothed it down, when I start to polish it, the polisher starts to stick. It is very hot here at the moment (28 to 32 degrees) and I am finding that the fondant is absorbing the moisture from the cake due to the temperature change. I have tried using loads of cornflour and icing sugar, but after about 2 movements with the polisher it sticks to the fondant.

Any ideas, gratefully received.

Sorry. I passed over the last part of your comment. Try uncovering the cake and adding Cornstarch into your fondant. Knead it through until you do not feel the sticky texture.

That’s a real tough one!! There’s just not a lot you can do when the temperature is so hot/humid. Same thing happened to me covering a RKT car last week. Luckily, I had started on it a week early and had the time to let it set up in a cool closet and it dried as soon as the humidity lifted a bit; but my fondant looks a bit ‘melted’ even though it’s dry. If you have time, put it in a cool place an give it a day or so. Good luck!!

Sounds random…….and might be a totally mad idea……but could you put it onto a turntable take the shelves out of the fridge, put it on the bottom and work with the door open “inside the fridge” if that makes sense…..not been drinking honestly….lol!! With the door open it won’t be so damp in there and it might give you some time to work on it……..worth a try??? Then take it out and put it somewhere safe and dry once the humidity drops. xx

When it’s got, I cover in the evenings. Or I’ve had a fan blowing on it while covering. You can even place iced water bottled in front of fan to make it cooler

You must never limit your challenges, instead you must challenge your limits

Thanks for all your tips, and I solved it in the end, although not quite what you would expect, I covered it with cornstarch, smoothed it a bit with the palm of my hand, put the fan on and then "polished " it with a brand new J cloth(as this doesn’t drop fibres) and it worked a treat.
Stupid thing was I needed to cover the sides with loads of mini flowers (you’ll see the pic tomorrow), so I probably could have got away with it. Any how another technique learnt on how to get round an obstacle a non conventional way.
Thanks a lot for all your tips, and go get a wine Karen, as I have now that I am finished for the night. 10.30pm

Ha, ha, one step ahead of you on that one…….starting to sound like a lush xxx But it’s a very warm evening again, and a glass of Rose hits the spot xx Glad you sorted it, and I’ll remember what you did so you taught us a thing or two thanks xxx

Hi Mandy! So pleased to hear you covered it in the end!! I agree with all the great tips above, but what I use and can’t live without is a dehumidifier!! I have it going constantly in the room where I do my cakes with the door closed, Nothing ever melts or goes soft or sticky, no matter the temperature outside, the dehumidifier keeps everything lovely and dry. Can’t stress enough how brilliant they are!!

Great tip Eli, have added that to my list of “wants” from Santa. Once we get up and running and luxury cash is available, boy am I going spending. My hubbie has only just got back to fitness after 11 months out with a broken collarbone, so any money gained at the moment goes on the bills. But One Day !!!!!!!

I’m going to add a dehumidifier to my Christmas wish list too xx

Do you keep your cakes in the fridge before you cover? If you do, you want to let the cake come back to room temperature before you put the fondant on. Otherwise, the humidity that forms when the cake goes from cold to warm will land on your fondant.

Good job rescuing the cake though!
