2020 profile update

I’ve been a cake decorator for 10 years, starting when I was 57, and fell into this wonderful creative craft by accident.

In the 10 years I’ve been on the most wonderful journey and met and forged friendships globally. I’m honoured to have been featured in magazines in various countries as well as here in UK.
My most humbling experience is to win the prestigious Cake Masters “Cake Artist of the Year 2015” Award at a gala event at the NEC in Birmingham. I was awarded the Cake Masters “Top 10 Cake Artist UK” for 2017, along with my other cake artist colleagues of whom I admire greatly! 2018 I was flabbergasted to be nominated for “Cake Hero” Award by ACADA (Australian Cake Artists and Designers).

I’ve pushed my own boundaries in cake art, with my speciality being hand-painted cakes. This was an experiment I tried back in 2011 using colour dusts and vodka, and since then moved onto cacao butter. I am honoured to be an ambassador for Saracino, using their modelling chocolate, pasta top, colour gels and dusts, cacao butter, modelling paste

Before cakes I was a Facilities Manager for two large American software companies and loved it. My husband persuaded me to give up this to go back to my creative roots as had left it for a decade, as previously to Facilities, was a graphics artist, illustrator and restorator for the War Museum in South Africa, and textile designer/studio head in South Africa too. So fine art painting is new to me, and self taught.

I enjoy teaching cake decorating locally in my area as well as internationally. I’ve been fortunate to feature some of my works at Cakes International. Knowledge-sharing is an integral part of sugar craft art.

Over and above everything mentioned, my most enjoyable part of cake decorating, is the pleasure it brings others and makes my heart sing with joy when I see the smiles from both young and old, whether it’s a birthday, wedding or any event.

I’m involved less in cake orders now, and mainly do for family and friends celebrations.

Outside of cakes, I'm doing quite a few painting commissions and hobby painting (mainly portraits and animals in watercolours, oils and acrylics), and spend a lot more time with my sons, step daughters and our joint 7 grandchildren! So we sure are busy. In our free time we do a lot of hiking around this beautiful countryside, with our gorgeous 2year old Springer Spaniel, which I find a calming mindful way to de-stress and stop and smell the roses. My camera is never far from my side as I’m a keen amateur photographer.
My sweet gentle sister Valerie (living in South Africa) is a highly talented artist, and we chat art, spirituality and other like-minded subjects and so wonderful we share this gift from our maker.
