Let's talk Mixers: whatcha got, whatcha love, whatcha hate?
I’ll start.
I’ve burned out my second Kitchen Aid in less then a year.
My first kitchen aid 5qt lasted over 25 years, and it’s still running. (I gave it to a friend)
My husband replaced it for me with a refurbished 6qt about ten years ago. It died 4 months ago.
I replaced that with a refurbished KA 6qt professional, 3 months ago and last week, the gears where shot.
(I am only mixing cake batter, buttercream icing, and fondant)
I was able to exchange the 3 month old KA for another refurbished KA.
Well, I’ve only used the new KA for about A week. I’ve mixed a few batches of cake batter and a few batches of buttercream and already it is acting up. It is making noise and when it goes in speed 6, I can hear a clicking noise in the gears when I am mixing buttercream. I want to take it back and get my money back (if possible) and purchase a Viking 7 qt.
I’d like to hear about what kind of mixer YOU have, and what kind of successes or failures you have had with it.

That’s awful! I’ve got a KA 4.5 qt, refurbished, that we’ve used for our family for … at least 15 years, and it still runs though had started making noises under the stress of cookie dough. Therefore, I have a new KA 5qt Artisan, bought a year ago but just in use for four months. It doesn’t seem to be as sturdy as the original model, but haven’t had issues to date with it. I’m very interested in hearing input on other makers, though. I expect I"m going to need a second machine in about a year.
I have a KA 4.5 qt mixer I bought about 12 years ago and I just recently added in a KA 6 qt professional mixer 7 months ago. Both mixers were brand new when I got them and still work prefectly.
So sorry to hear you have had so many problems with your KA mixers.
I just had a 6 qt KA die on me the other day. As the old saying goes, I don’t think they make them like they used to! I have a 4 qt refurb that I have had for at least 15 years and it still runs like new. I was looking at the 7 qt pro model that Williams Sonoma offers, but $550 is a lot for a brand I am quickly losing confidence in.
I can tell you that powdered sugar WILL get inside the head unit and can eventually coat the electrical contacts. If your unit just won’t turn on anymore, unplug, take the head off and blow the insides good with canned air / airbrush compressor.
