Hello,
over the years I’ve seen some beautiful cakes on here that are described as ‘Thun’ cakes.
They always look like they are a traditional style and have some sort of history to them.
I’ve googled ‘Thun’ and lots of examples come up but no information about them really.
So I’d like to know more about them, and I know this is the right place to ask.
What exactly is ‘Thun’ style? – Where does it originate from?- And are there any rules for recreating ‘Thun’?
Looking forward to hearing more xx
Please feel free to post any Thun cakes you may have made on my forum xxx

I’ve just been searching, and looking at a few tutorials, it seems the style of Thun cakes comes from Italy.
It’s a sort of thicker more 3D effect of decoration. Might have a go at one?
Thanks so much Penny Sue xx
I couldn’t find anything about where the style comes from but I really like them.
They have an ‘old’ look about them like hand crafted wood. I wondered if they were from Germany because they sort of remind me of Hummel ornaments. I think I’m going to work the style into a cake soon too. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with xx Thanks again xx :-)

Hi Karen, this link might answer some questions, there’s a small history of the thun ceramics and origins, they are Italian indeed. Thun cakes are very popular in Italy, I made this one using a thun-style angel decoration
. Hope this will help :-)

Thank you so much Adelina xx Your cake is stunning. I love the ‘antique’ look you get with this style of cake decorating. And thank you for the link too. I’ll settle down with a cup of tea and enjoy reading all about Thun this evening. Thanks again xx
