Wire work

Hi fellow CD’s
Hoping for some help. I have been kindly given an Alan Dunn sugar flower book. Please could someone enlighten me on the wires he refers to. I’m used to seeing the word ‘gauge’ however Alan just uses mm. How do I work out which width is the ‘gauge’.
Hope this makes sense and looking forward to your invaluable advise as always.
