Lava Flames on a Cake

Hi, I’ve been asked to do a Star Wars cake, but the client wants “realistic” looking lava around the cake and on top. I first thought of using melted sugar, but it may be too angular and hard – so then I thought about using colored fondant to make flames then paint melted fondant on top of that to make it gooey????

Any suggestions?
