Cake Supply Rental Idea
So I was thinking it would be cool if there was somewhere you can rent cake supplies. I have a cake to do for the end of the month and really needed the Fishnet Mat from Cake Lace. I hemmed and hawed about buying it for this one cake since it would cost me half the price I am charging for the cake. As a hobby baker it is hard to swallow the prices for the mat if I can’t guarantee needing it again.
That’s when I thought wouldn’t it be cool to have a place to borrow those tools you only need once. I was just throwing this out there to see if anyone else has come across this predicament or if it was just me :)

I belong to a cake club, and I’ve lent my large lace mat to someone in my group. I mean, it’s worth about $80, but I won it. And it’s just sitting in my cake drawer. Saved her $$$. Other than this, or a cake friend, don’t see how it would be possible.

I agree with you Jen! It would be great if something like that was possible! I am always purchasing items that I know I will only use once!

June – the only way I could see it working is that there is a rental fee of the cost of the item to replace if it is not returned. Along the line of what I do when I use my supports in a tiered cake. I have my customers give me a deposit and if they return the support system i send them back the voided check.
The end cost of renting the item would be the shipping back and forth. It is probably still cheaper for smaller items like a mat than buying the mat.
I totally agree, it’s a a great idea. It would have to be somewhere local to where you lived. Couldn’t see online working. Especially if you need the items right away.
