Fondant dog topper modelling

Hi everyone
I’ve got to make 3 basset hound as toppers to go on a cake in a couple of weeks and haven’t really done much dog modelling.
Has anyone got any tips or advice that they can offer, for example do you make the head and body all out if one piece of fondant or make the head separately and attach to the body. How about the legs?
I’d like to do a variation of them sitting, lying down and standing! So I’ve set myself a bit of a challenge! Thank you x

I did a basset hound for a cake a few years ago and was really stressing it. However, from recollection, since I haven’t done another since, I made the body out of one long piece of modelling paste by sculpting and made the head separately. I did prop the body up on an angle to give the impression he was sitting until it dried so it would have the distinctive basset hound shape, then attached the head with a cocktail stick and supported that too until dry and firm. I think I would use my colour shapers if I was making one today and paint the markings instead of gluing them on. I hope this helps and good luck with the cake.

Aaawww thanks Lizzie. You’re hound is very cute! I’m sure it’ll be ok once I get started sometimes I think it’s more about the anticipation and worry than the actual thing itself!! X

I know what you mean Lizzie. I spend at least 90% of my life worrying about how I’m going to do my next cake. It’s actually a blessing when someone gives me such short notice that I don’t have time to worry! lol I can’t wait to see your finished cake. I know it will be fantastic. 😀 x

Oh I do hope so! Yes I know what you mean about the short notice. I’m purposely not doing much at the moment because my daughter is on her easter hols but when she goes back to school I’ve got this basset hound cake, a frozen cake and my first minion cake to do all within the first week of May! So really I want to start the modelling now…dogs, anna, elsa etc but I can’t get on with anything!lol x

Hi Lizzie !
I’m not sure if you’ll be able to tell from ‘Bella’, but her body was a sort of fat sausage, with the neck end tilted up … the legs, head and tail were added separately (the head was added once the body had dried slightly and firm enough to hold it) and blended in … I cheated a little and put her brown patches where most of the joins were … Pretty much the same way as Kizzy ! Hope that helps a little ! (Oh, and I made her from 50:50 sugar/modelling paste) Good luck xx
