Black colored Gumpaste

Anyone have a problem with black colored gum paste and fondant fading? It within 1 day….not in any florescent lights. Got any ideas what to do

Yes. Add a couple of tsp of baking soda to your fondant and knead it in. You won’t taste the baking soda, and it helps “set” the colour. I do this with purple, but it works for black too. Especially if it’s homemade.
Hope this helps…..

Thanks for the tip June!! I’d not heard that before!! I’ve always purchased black; but have had problems with my purple fading…gonna try baking soda for sure:) Do you know if that trick works in buttercream as well?

That’s great news, jchuck – I’ll have to try that! I really noticed my black fading when I did those Air Jordan shoes a few weeks back. It was heartbreaking too, because they looked SO good before the fade. No one probably realized it but me, but it still stung a little.

I did m sons RCT hockey skate for his b-day cake last Jan, and the black stayed true for 5- 6 full days.

Great tip, thanks… I’ve only ever made black gumpaste using premade black fondant, I don’t think it faded but I’ll go and check now…

When I make black fondant I first add lots of cocoa powder mixed with a little cooking oil. When I have a dark brown colour I start adding black gel colour. This way I use much less gel colour and the black tastes and smell delicious.
