Cake Disasters

One of "THOSE" days

Hi has anyone else had one of “those” days recently when the gods are against you. Let me know your stories, so that I am not the only one cursed every now and then.

I’ve got 2 stories and here they are.

Today I had to deliver the animal tower cake. Sounds easy but between me and the client is a gorge.
Okay, I am used to that I just need to drive slowly down the windy single track road and up the other side managing to negotiate the 4 hairpin bends, the oncoming traffic and the cambers on the road. What I hadn’t banked on was my husband deciding to stay one more day with the children to watch the Tour De France bike race, WITH THE CAR!!!
So I had to deliver the cake on top of a huge pile of blankets (shock absorbers) on the seat in the cab of my husbands tipper lorry. Luckily I got there okay, although I was about 10 minutes late, after having to crawl along, and the cake survived. I put it into the hands of the client and got out quick.

The second disaster, was actually a disaster, and resulted in me giving the client some money back (which I hate to do).
Several weeks ago I had to make a sweet table for a client and on the way to her house I was badly cut up by another driver on a roundabout. I had to slam on the brakes and my poor daughter who was holding the chocolate cakepops ended up wearing them. Normally they would have been covered, but due to the hot weather they were still sticky and I didn’t want any clingfilm to stick to them. So I had to turn around, and get her cleaned up, before we could deliver the rest of the items. Still the chickens enjoyed the cakepops.

So let me know if you have been cursed by the gods, and have a good laugh at my nightmares. I will keep you all updated as there are sure to be others.

yes we have all had some bad times with delivery or construction or something cake related. So chin up and let it go, I have almost thrown in the towel of cake making several times but in the end I don’t think I ever will. I am pretty passionate about my cakes so yeah I think I am in this for the long haul.
Take care and keep on caking, and remember to have fun also.

When I was delivering my Rugby Wedding cake a little boy stepped out into the road (his parents weren’t watching him), I braked quickly and the Wedding cake slid backwards knocking the legs of the bride off from the ankle down………after feeling sick at the thought of what just nearly happened I got to the venue and then had to work in the back of the boot of my car with my repair kit to stick her legs back on……luckily her feet were sitting to the back of the cake on display so I don’t think anyone ever noticed……you live to fight another day xxx

Just as well I’m passionate as well as having a good sense of fun. Had a laugh at the thought of you sticking the brides legs on in the carpark. Great to hear I am not the only insane caker around.

Here is a chuckle. I was delivering a SpongeBob cake to a birthday party at Chuckee Cheese. The way I created SpongeBob on the cake board made it impossible to box completely. So, when I arrived and walked into Chuckee Cheese all the kids in the place surrounded me yelling, SpongeBob"! I had the cake lifted high but one of the kids managed to pull his leg off! I was in shock! Luckily the child that broke SpongeBob’s leg was a guest at the party I was delivering to. Dodged that one! ;) Picture was before he lost his leg.

Great to hear your story Jolene, I had a good giggle. Kids can be right little bu***rs at times, but sometimes the oldens are the worst. I once had one old lady poke her finger into one of my cupcakes as she wanted to “prove” to her friend that it was not real. Unfortunately for me she shot off before I could say anything.

oh shame, yes I know those days only too well… ive had a few with very heartstopping moments… I will share this story…
this cake I transported to London, it took forever to paint the LV logo and to make the shoe and dog. it was a chocolate cake… I was still relatively new at cake carving and stupidly layered a chocolate cake and then turned it to carve with the layers running vertically…. yeagh you guessed it… 30 mins before I got to my destination, I turned to check the cake… the layers had seperated!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i wish I had taken a pic, but was too upset to think about it, all I could think was HOW AM I GOING TO FIX IT!!!! hahaha… I rushed into the office of the mother who ordered it, took over her office kitchen and quickly whipped up some choc ganache and kinda “glued” it all back together again and popped it into the fridge & prayed like billy ho… it worked!!! . I refused payment for it even though she insisted as I felt they were not getting a decent cake. the lass how got it was over the moon….bless her, how kind :)
thanks for the discussion… we all relate to this, as I can read here… hahahaha… kids hey??
this pic is before damage… glad I at least had that :)

but if you look at the corner at the base… you can see where its starting to collapse… I did not even see that at the time

Omg I have 2 weddings coming up for friends and will be delivering pre-stacked cakes for the first time, help! Reading this I just thought how horribly wrong it could go.. Do u have any tips for me that might help?

I’ve been very fortunate….never had a delivery disaster. But have had icing completely fall off a cake!! It was a vegan icing, new recipe. But this was my daughters birthday cake…so we had a good laugh, I re-iced it and we ate it…tasted good. I have 2 pro decorator friends who NEVER deliver. If they’ve had to, it was extraordinary circumstances. In the cake consultation, they give out printed instructions on how to transport.

Oh Cali…it truly was hilarious!! My daughter knows I am a nutty perfectionist…she’s just like me too…ha ha. Icing fell, or rather slid off twice. I know the mistake I made…so lessened learned. Samantha teased me mercilessly…. But…cake and icing were really tasty….gave us a smile and memories…
