When i did my blue flower cake i did both the backgrounds at the same time, but wanted to leave the black one to dry overnight so i could add the pink on top. for the poppies i used royal icing coloured baby pink and just brushed it on pushing out the edges, i then went over with poppy red, fuschia and white. I think next time i do painted flowers i will try buttercream instead of royal icing.
