Sheer bridal veil using edible materials

Hello my lovely cake friends xx
I’ve got another topic I’d like some advice with please.
I want to make a brides veil on a fondant topper that is see through (opaque not totally translucent).

I want to be able to see the back of the Wedding dress through the veil and want it to looks like net not lace. The link shows the type of effect I’m trying to achieve.

I don’t know what to use…l thought about using rice paper, but it’s not sheer enough and sugarveil is too “lacey”. Sheets of gelatine are too sheer……

I want something that drapes well….don’t want to resort to using real net fabric really.

Any ideas?

I have seen Sugar Veil piped to make netting before, but they also make mats that aren’t “as lacy” as others. Take a look at this one:

I have been playing with some Sugar Dress lately and I have really been impressed with it. You can get some neat mats on Etsy also. Just search for “sugar mat” or “lace mat”. Good luck!!

Have you thought about using isomalt? You could use clear and then dust it with lustre. It may be a little tricky but you are clever, judging by your cakes. :)

Oh what a brilliant idea …..no I hadn’t thought of that!!! Well done……..I think you’ve cracket it xx I’ll get some and have a practice xx

I would love to see how you end up doing it in isomalt. That is an awesome idea. I wanted to do tulle look on a cake and gave up because I could not figure out how to make it look like tulle and still stand out from the cake on its own

I’ve ordered some isomalt from Amazon…….and spent last night watching some amazing you tube videos of how to use it with a fantastic lady promoting “cake play”. I’m soooooooooo inspired, and thinking of all the things I could do. I deffinately think you’d be able to make tulle. Can’t wait for it to come now!! Thank you so much for giving me the idea Fancy Fondant WA xx

Yay, so glad I could help Karen. Can’t wait to see what you do with it.

Well….the Isomalt arrived, it took about 4 goes to get it right because it’s so hot and by the time I could handle it with gloves it was shattering. But I got there eventually and you can keep re-heating it so at least I didn’t ruin it.
I’m really pleased with the result, I dusted it with lustre and just worrying now that it might go sticky or shatter……Wedding not till the 9th May so a few days yet. What do you think? They met at a fancy dress party so they wanted to be in their wedding clothes but their faces are as they were when they first met.

Thank you again everyone for all your help xxx You were fantastic!!!!!

I think you did a great job on the veil Karen!. I to have worked with isomalt and it can get very frustrating. I would love to know how you were able to do the veil if you don’t mind sharing.

Thank you, I don’t mind sharing. I melted about 8-10 “nibs” in a glass jug in bursts of 20 seconds till it was all bubbling away. Then I took the jug out of the microwave and waited till the bubbles subsided till nearly all gone. Then with some latex gloves on I poured the melted liquid onto a lightly greased non stick sheet.
I poured it in a shape like the veil…..rounded at the bottom and tapered to the top. Then waited for about 2 mins till it was just touchable and lifted it off the sheet. Working VERY quickly I stretched the shape out a little so I could pleat it a bit then shaped it and put it straight onto the bride so it stuck as it made contact. Then left it to cool completely. Once dry I attached the daisies and dusted it with lustre dust………….hope that’s not too long winded. The main thing is to work quickly before it sets and shatters. It’s VERY hot so take special care xx

Karen,
