Design Dilemma on Mehndi Pattern

Hey, guys. I have a design dilemma and I would appreciate your advice. A bride has contacted me requesting a wedding cake with a design similar to this one by Jen’s Cakes. Here’s my dilemma: I’m NOT a great piper and I definitely know that I won’t be able to turn this out. How would you go about it? Frozen buttercream transfer? Royal icing piped onto wax paper, left to dry on round dummies and applied after it dries? This is obviously a buttercream cake but another option would be to cover it in fondant and use a royal icing stencil. I’ve looked into silicone onlays but so far my search hasn’t turned up any results. I would love to hear any other ideas I haven’t thought about. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you looked for lace molds other than Onlays and edging strip molds

Maybe have a look at Marvelous Molds’ lace molds – they have some really beautiful ones that can be used to create a very similar look to this.

Thanks! I’ll go have a look.

… So I’ve looked at hundreds of molds but I have yet to find one with this Indian inspired mehndi-style pattern that we’re going for. Now I’m on the hunt for some mehndi lace so that I can attempt to make my own molds.

Hi Kendra, there are actually a lot of mehndi molds you can buy from some Indian stores, depending on where you are. I remember my mom buying me one in the shape of a palm. You lay it on and spread the mehndi on. You might be able to buy a few and cut them up to what you need. If you can’t find them in stores you might be able to order online somewhere. If you can’t find them anywhere I would gladly mail you some. I love the mehndi look on cakes, one day I will definitely try it.

Thanks so much, Preety! That’s so kind of you. The bride ended up canceling so I won’t need it after all. I appreciate your offer and maybe I’ll be able to take you up on it in the future.

Kendra, you are so talented you can pull this off – use a small piping tip and little by little you can build on the patterns – these designs are so detailed that if you make a mistake you can just transform that into another element of the design. Yes, you can start with a stencil and then trace over it to give it more dimension and then maybe add more details of your own. Try to practice first on styrofoam if you have time until the cake is due. You have immense talent – don’t sell yourself short. :-) Can’t wait to see the results!
