Has anyone ever made a photo box? Do you use on-site?
My biggest shortcoming is taking a decent picture of my finished cakes. One reason is because I don’t have any sort of photo box, so I may have to come up with a solution for that. But also, I don’t like to stack my layers until I get to the site where the cake is being delivered. So, for those of you that take such fantastic photos, do you travel with a photo box? Is this overkill? I always end up just taking a not so great photo with my iPhone and then spending forever trying to take out a crappy background with Photoshop. I’m still VERY new to the cake decorating world, and would still very much be considered a beginner. Any tips from you well-seasoned artists that you can share with me? I don’t know much about photography, but I also would love to take better photos of my cakes. One of the last cakes I made I decided to take a picture of it outside. Wow, it really made such a huge difference. All of my other cake pictures were taken inside using an Ott Light which is supposed to be like natural outdoor lighting. From now on, I’m going to try and take more outdoor pictures.

As for getting good pics on site, think about bringing some fabric and have someone hold it up as a backdrop. If your camera has a flash, look at some diffusers so the light won’t be so harsh. Check around your town to see if there is a photography club. We have one here in our town. They offer a hands on class once a month. The membership dues are $35 a year, but it is SO worth it! My pictures have gotten so much better since I joined.

Thanks Toni! It was actually pretty inexpensive too. I bought the flexible lights at IKEA, and the backdrop papers I got from Adorama. I think they were less than $20 per roll. I have a couple of cheap clamp on lights that I use too when I need extra light.
