Hi fellow cakers
I have a question regarding cupcake pricing — I was asked to make 30 cupcakes with buttercream swirls and fondant leaves — I told a price of 2 euro’s per cup cake — but as I knew the lady for a long time I told her I’ll give her a 20 percent special discount that would make a price little more than 1,50 euro per cupcake — in my opinion it was a great deal and also fair for me — but she told me that decorator make it for 1,20 euro per cupcake — I said no problem its her money and her choice — but I kept thinking how could they make it as low as 1,20 euro per cupcake for only 30 cupcakes — I need your help regarding that as I find pricing the cake as the most duffult part.

I would of told her nicely, to go with the other decorator… I like to get paid for my time and also I need to pay for my overhead expenses with are not small…not only the ingredients I use…

Thanks Elena for your reply — it means whoever is charging so low is only charging for the ingredients!!

I have started to decline orders like this or in some cases where I know the customer educate them about the process so it is understood how much time, effort and cost is involved. I am happy not to take orders where the customer wants an expensive cake for a cheap price, whereas I used to before until I realised I am not helping other decorators in the area trying to make a living.

Thanks Anna for your reply — you are right Anna — I did say politely that this was the best I could do for her — but I didn’t make my position clear by explaining her all things as Elena also mentioned in her reply above — I’m not so good in conversations I must work on that!!
