Tall cake...Pls help

I am making a cat in a hat themed cake for my son. It will be two-tiered. With the top tier fashioned as a top hat. I am thinking for baking four 2" by 6" cakes, and torting and filling them thinly with buttercream (thus having a total of eight layers). Next, am also planning to have a cake board midway and dowels for support. Am I on right track or do i need to do something more or change something. Any help or guidance will be really appreciated, since am just a hobby baker.
thanks.

You are certainly on the right track. you may want to consider covering with ganache for added support and make sure your allow time for it to set up between coverings (crumb icing, BC/ganache, fondant, etc.) because all those torted layers will be more susceptible to ‘sliding’. A center dowel thru the entire cake would be ideal.
