I am left handed and I am having a issue finding the perfect cake carving knife. I have a drawer full of knives, dollar store knives to Macy’s. I am just realizing that 99.9% of the knives sold are designed for right handed people. So my question is what type of knife do you left handed people use and where can I find this knife.

Hi there Jaclyn. I have to say, as a leftie myself, I did not know you could get knives for left handed people, which may explain why I struggle a bit with cake cutting and use a cake leveller like this, to cut my cakes evenly through, pre adding filler. its not the greatest and I know there are better ones out there (at a price!!) but I mange just fine and my levels are even…

so I googled left handed knives and loads of links came up, here is one (but its UK)

My eldest son bought me a state of the art, long bladed cake cutting knife, it was fabulous, but could not use it at all and had to replace it for something else. … as an aside, I am hopeless with right handed scissors and have left handed ones. I am also looking into left handed airbrushes that have become available as my current one is a bit awkward, but managing fine :)
love to hear how others manage… thanks for opening the debate xx

You must never limit your challenges, instead you must challenge your limits

Hello from another leftie who has never heard of left handed knives. I just went to get my lovely little serrated knife from the drawer to tell you the type I use and have remembered that I always cut with my right hand but I see what you mean – the blade definitely has a front and a back (it is a Kuhn Rikon – I love it). To level my cakes I do as Calli does and use a wire – one of my best cake tools ever! So, sorry I haven’t been much help to you but it’s nice to say hello anyway :-)

Three of my five children are left handed and as children I bought left handed scissors but hadn’t really considered knives. I guess they somehow figured out how to use the right hand for that. Things are getting better for lefties but it is still a right hand dominated world.
