Making gum paste glossy?

Hi,
I have some ombre 3D gum paste flames to put on a cake. They look great, but they’d look even better if I could make them shinier. Not sure if there’s an easy at-home way to do this. I was debating misting with sugar water (but suspect that would just leave white powder), spraying lightly with cooking spray (which would likely just make them gummy), or trying to heat them up slightly (probably just make them firmer). I do have gold glitter for decorating, the very fine powder. I will probably dust this on but I’d rather have a way to make the whole thing shinier. I am stuck at home with a newborn so if it’s something I’ll probably need to go buy, I’m out of luck!
Is there a way to do this?

And…newbie baker here. I’ve baked cakes for myself at home before but nothing fancy. I’m planning to bake the 9" pans and then just set them on the stove burners (cast iron for a gas stove) as stands to cool. I won’t be flipping them upside down. Then flip the the pans over to get the cakes out, wrap in saran wrap, and put in the fridge until time to frost them. Sound right?

Hello maroongrad, I’ve used corn syrup with a touch of vodka and painted fondant/gumpaste pieces to give it a shine.

…be sure that all pieces are completely dried before painting.

Cakeheart, love it…and we have those at home! How runny can I make the mix? If I can mist it on with a sprayer I’d be thrilled! Otherwise, this sounds like a great way to do this.

…I should mention it was light corn syrup that I used. I’ve only had a few pieces to cover so I’ve always just painted. The consistency was still a syrupy one, I used just tiny amount of vodka, just enough to able to paint…if that makes any sense :) Good luck to you!

Yep, makes total sense. I’ll probably use it on the tips of the flames, then. I have enough to ring a 9 in inch round cake for about four inches in height, all of them 3D with folds and such. I’ll probably do a little experimenting with spraying it on, simply because PAINTING all those pieces would literally take a couple hours. I really appreciate this, heading out to pick up LIGHT corn syrup now :)

Ooh that sound awesome…make sure you post it :) A little goes a long way, you don’t have to saturate the pieces. Have fun…and congrats on your new babe:)
